Hello,

Thanks to my fellow colleagues, I've been named October Employee of the month here at Portland Volvo!

It's hard to believe I'm approaching my 3 year anniversary here at this location.  I first started with the Waldron Motor Group at the Falmouth location with the opening of Portland Saab in late 1999.   My automotive career actually started back in February, 1987 when I began working at a small VW dealership in Saco - Coastal Volkswagen.  From there I've dabbled in politics, having worked in both the McKernan administration and in the Maine Legislature in the early-mid 1990's.

My family has been in the car business for generations.  My grandfather, Harry Smart, was the Northeast US representative for Ford Lincoln Mercury prior to WWII.  After the war, he opened the very first suburban Ford dealership in the US on Pleasant Street in Brunswick, which he owned and operated from 1947 to 1961.  I also have an uncle in Shelburne, Vermont, who specializes in Porsche and other German vehicles.  So, it's all in my blood!

A lot has evolved over the years, but my passion for the automotive world remains strong.  My wife, Bette, and I both enjoy driving and regularly take road trips, sometime in lieu of flying!  Within the past 12 months, we have ventured to the Carolinas, the Gulf Coast of Florida, Downeast Maine (all the way to Lubec) and, most recently, into the mountains of Vermont.

Bette and I both enjoy mid-century design (she works at the Herman Miller dealership in Portland) and built a modern, green house in Portland in 2009.  This past August, we moved to Portland's Eastern Prom after selling our house on Craig's List in 3 days.  Go figure!  We love the vibrancy of our new neighborhood and all it has to offer, plus, we have the entire prom as our yard and and exploring the Portland Trails system is always fun.

Working at Portland Volvo is unlike any other dealership.  Here we are all treated like family (not like a number in a corporation) and most of my fellow co-workers have been with the dealership for a good long time.  We have a fantastic, dedicated client base and a solid, reliable and well-priced product that presents an incredible value in today's marketplace.

I look forward to seeing both present customers and new faces in the coming year.  Volvo's future is bright as is that of Portland Volvo.

Sincerely,

Carrington "Cary" Smart
