In response to a growing need within the community, members of the First Parish Congregational Church launched a volunteer-run diaper bank in April 2021. What began as a humble effort has grown into a vital program, supporting between 25 and 40 families every week with free diapers—an often-overlooked necessity that is critical for the health and well-being of babies.

Each Wednesday from 4 pm to 6 pm, volunteers gather at First Parish Church, located at 12 Beach Street in Saco, to distribute diapers to families. On average, between 1,400 and 2,000 diapers are given out weekly, thanks to the generosity of church members, local businesses, and individuals throughout the community.

Among the supporters is Portland Volvo Cars, which proudly backs the diaper bank’s mission and encourages others to contribute as well. “This is about ensuring every child in our community has the dignity of clean diapers and every parent feels supported,” says Tim Watson, a spokesperson for the dealership.

The need for such services is significant. Nationally, nearly 1 in 3 American families struggles to afford enough diapers to keep their babies clean and dry. The cost of diapers adds up quickly—a baby can require 6 to 12 diapers per day, totaling around 2,500 to 3,000 diapers annually. For many families, this can mean spending $70 to $100 per month, just on diapers alone—an expense not covered by government assistance programs like SNAP or WIC.

The health benefits of consistent diapering go beyond comfort. Babies left in soiled diapers for too long are at increased risk of diaper rash, infections, and even long-term skin conditions. For parents, the inability to provide clean diapers can lead to feelings of stress, guilt, and depression—especially when daycare facilities require parents to supply their own diapers in order for their children to attend.

The Saco Diaper Bank provides more than just diapers—it offers relief, dignity, and hope.

As the initiative enters its fifth year, the church and its partners remain committed to serving families with compassion and consistency. They are always in need of diapers (all sizes), baby wipes, and reusable shopping bags, and welcome donations from anyone looking to make a difference.

“Every diaper donated helps a child stay healthy and a parent breathe a little easier,” says Heidi Byrd, one of the volunteers.
