2022 VOLVO XC40 VS BMW X1
Compact Luxury SUVs are known to offer excellent rides with luxurious interiors, which results in their achieving top-selling status in the industry. The Volvo XC40 and the BMW X1 are rivals in the marketplace due to their similar features and how well they perform on the highway. When you're ready to purchase a compact luxury SUV that is reliable and versatile, there are a few top features to review between both vehicles to determine which one will accommodate your driving habits.
Exterior Features
The 2022 Volvo XC40 is nothing short of striking. The SUV stands out in its class for its youthful design that includes a tall and wide stance. Its ground clearance is better than the BMW X1, and the rear has a spunky design with L-shaped taillights and minimal styling. The wheels range in size from 18 to 21 inches, along with a unique front grille that stands out from the crowd. The X1's exterior is stylish, but standard for a luxury SUV from BMW, leaving the split kidney grille and chrome detailing rather underwhelming compared to the innovative styling of the XC40.
Performance
Drivers will find that the XC40 holds its own and offers a dynamic driving experience that is also stable. The vehicle remains controlled when driving over harsh surfaces, which will appeal to those who are looking for a comfortable ride, even on rough surfaces. Enhanced agility is also one of the top selling points of the XC40 with adjustable suspension available as an add-on. With a T4 version of the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, the XC40 generates 184 horsepower, or 248 horsepower and acceleration from 0-60 mph in 6.5 seconds, if you upgrade to the T5. It's also extremely fuel-efficient for an SUV, with 23 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway.
Equipped with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and an eight-speed automatic transmission, the BMW X1 accelerates from 0-60 mph in 7.9 seconds, and generates 228 horsepower. Its fuel-efficiency is almost identical to the XC40, with 23 mpg city and 32 mpg highway. Compared with the Volvo XC40, it's driving feels slightly more refined. Three different driving modes are offered, including Sport, Comfort, and Eco Pro.
Consumer Ratings
Drivers favor the Volvo XC40 for its clutter-free cabin, active safety features, infotainment system and a 9-inch touchscreen. The car's styling also gives the vehicle an advantage over the BMW X1, and the long hood and rear spoiler also give it a sporty appearance.
Abundant passenger room is a strong point the BMW X1, especially for long drives. High-quality craftsmanship is also visible throughout the cabin, along with a six-inch screen that is smaller than what is offered in the XC40. The screen also isn't a touchscreen, which is problematic for some drivers and can make it less convenient to use while driving. The SensaTec faux leather upholstery is also a downside for drivers because it looks and feels cheap compared to the Volvo.
